Killeen nonprofit holds spring fundraiser

By Joseph Bahr

Killeen Creators, a local nonprofit, hosted its annual spring fundraising event over the weekend.

Killeen Creators executive director Kristin Wright said the idea for the class came after the non-profit noticed it was serving primarily veterans or active service members. Through creating art, she was able to help her mental health. Wright wanted to provide a similar service to Killeen Creators' clients.

"Even if they weren't in active duty, there's usually a lot of loss and grief and levels of change that are hard to process," Wright said. "And art and nature do it naturally."

Joshua Stinnett, six-year U.S. Army veteran, instructs the class. He has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress syndrome. He said he can heal as much through teaching the class as the students do by taking it.

"For me, it's having that community and no-pressure place to express myself where I can relate to people with similar stepping-stones in life," Stinnett said.
