Art program helps Killeen, Texas veterans heal trauma

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) - An art class hosted by non-profit Killeen Creators aims to help people impacted by the military find community and process trauma through art creation.
The class is called Operation Art of Recovery. It is funded through the National Endowment for the Arts.
Killeen Creators executive director Kristin Wright said the idea for the class came after the non-profit noticed it was serving primarily veterans or active service members. Through creating art, she was able to help her mental health. Wright wanted to provide a similar service to Killeen Creators' clients.
"Even if they weren't in active duty, there's usually a lot of loss and grief and levels of change that are hard to process," Wright said. "And art and nature do it naturally."
