AMERICORPS CORNER

MLK Day of Service

MLK Day of Service

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, Killeen Creators’ Equal Heart AmeriCorps members served our community by hosting a MLK (Music, Literature & Knowledge) event rooted in connection, creativity, and reflection. Operation Art of Recovery (OAR) poets shared powerful spoken word, live music filled the space, and video clips of Dr. King’s speeches reminded us of his vision for community, peace, and togetherness.

OAR is every Friday 4-6pm at our Killeen Creators Studio

Making the Most of Spring!

March is the launch of Spring, and April is the most magical month of Spring, serving as the official start of “warm season” planting before the intense heat of summer hits.

Hopefully, you got your seedlings started in February and early March, and now April is the perfect time to prioritize transplanting tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants EARLY in the month to make sure they get growing before the temperatures are in the high 90’s regularly. Beans (bush, pole, and lima), corn, cucumbers, cantaloupe, watermelon, summer squash, and pumpkins are all great to direct sow in April. Sweet potatoes can wait until mid to late April.

Now is the time to move around garden boxes if you need to change the placement of some crops, or if you want to try new produce and flowers.

Lastly, every season is the season to keep learning!

CREATOR STUDIO / RECOVERY CLUBHOUSE

What is Open Studio?

Open Studio is when our studio on 701 N. 10th St. is OPEN from 12pm-4pm Tuesday-Saturday. You are free to explore your creative side (yes, your creative side)! We have an abundance of art supplies, including many kinds of paint, colored pencils, stamps, stencils, etc, along with fiber art, embroidery, yarn to crochet or knit, fabric, patterns, and all supplies to actually sew! If none of those is your jam, we have supplies to make jewelry, a variety of craft kits, and even kid and adult coloring books.

Open Studio

You're also welcome to bring a project you’re working on and use your own supplies, if you prefer, and just come in to create with company! Aside from that, you can bring friends and family to play board games, hang out with new friends, or if you need access to a computer, we have one that is free to use - just ask one of our Americorps members!

Crochet Class

Crochet Class

Crochet Class is created to have two Fridays out of the month to make a certain project from 1pm-3pm. This is intended that if you come for the first class, you are coming to the second. Not only will you learn fun, seasonal projects, but you will learn the basics of reading a written pattern. Beginners are always welcome to come learn! Crochet takes time to learn, which means there is no guarantee that you will have a completed project after the two sessions, but you will walk away with a lot of knowledge to continue on your own.

Also, come into Crochet 4 a Cause and Open Studio for additional practice!

Painting With Purpose

Painting With Purpose is a welcoming, beginner-friendly art class where you can learn and grow creatively—no experience needed! Participants build foundational painting skills at a comfortable pace.
Held the last two Thursdays of each month, 1–3 PM, with two connected sessions that build on each other.

Open Studio Safe Space

*In APRIL, the class will be the 1st, 2nd & 4th Thursdays, so we can paint art and decorations for our Mad Hatter Tea Party!

Explore color theory, blending, monochromatic painting, silhouettes, and intro to animation-style art—all in a supportive, creative environment. Come paint, learn, and connect!💛

THANK YOU!

Hands showing harts

This time of year always brings hearts and reminders to share a little extra love, and it feels like the perfect time to say how truly grateful I am for each of you. Killeen Creators exist because of the people who believe in it — our members, sponsors, donors, teachers, volunteers, and the participants who show up ready to learn, create, and connect.

Whether you’re a sustaining member quietly supporting our mission month after month, an annual donor investing in our future, a teacher sharing your gifts, a volunteer giving your time, or someone who walks into a class with a smile and an open mind - you are the heart of this community.

Your generosity, encouragement, and presence are what transform Killeen Creators from simply a space into something meaningful. You are building more than art projects or classes; you are building connection, confidence, and a place where creativity can thrive.

This April, please know how much you are appreciated. We truly love the community we are creating together. 💛💛💛
