Thank You, Miss Jackie: Thank You, Miss Jackie! This month, we celebrate four incredible years of AmeriCorps service from Jacqueline "Miss Jackie" Hewitt to Killeen Creators and our community. Miss Jackie has brought an unmistakable enthusiasm for plants and veggies, cooking and good food, and—most of all—people. She believes deeply in the power of community and in creating spaces where people can grow, connect, heal, and find their way forward. Her service reflects something at the heart of Killeen Creators: believing in and showing up for people that too much of the world has given up on. For four years, Miss Jackie has helped us build the kind of community where people are supported in growth and recovery, one garden bed, shared meal, conversation, and relationship at a time. Thank you, Miss Jackie, for four years of planting seeds in every sense of the word. We are so grateful for you!

In September the heat slowly starts to simmer down and transition into the cooler seasons. This is the time we have been talking about: transitioning your garden to fall crops. If you decided to start some seedlings, you should have some established seedlings by now! September is a busy month full of garden layout maintenance and planting! Before planting you should move any garden beds you'd like, repair garden beds, replenish soil, and solidifying your garden plans for Fall. Here at KC we are resetting all gardens, letting the soil sit, replenishing with fresh compost, and fixing beds so that we can ensure all garden beds are full with Fall seedlings and seeds. Garden Rundown Everyone is welcome to come to all of our gardens to harvest what's ready. If you aren't sure what's ready you can ask an AmeriCorps Member or Staff that is present! 
What is available and ready varies day to day, season to season. Here are some of the vegetables and herbs that have been available in our gardens this last month: 10th Street Garden: green beans, zucchini, okra, some tomatoes, lemon balm, dill, cilantro, collard greens, sage, peppers, eggplant Alvarez Garden: Swiss chard, lemon balm, chocolate mint, dill, collard greens, kale, cantaloupe, malabar spinach, peppers, eggplant, some tomato Kelly's Garden (Bundrant): Okra, green beans, kale, some peppers, some tomatoes Due to the extreme heat and a new AmeriCorps team we will be doing a reset in ALL of the gardens to ensure there will be even more produce in the Fall! Garden Workdays If you've been interested in helping in the gardens or interested in learning how our garden works, come to our garden workdays!
Alvarez Garden: Tuesdays 9am-11am If there is extreme weather (like downpours and thunder/lightning) it is safe to assume we wont be having a workday! Check our Facebook page if wondering. We ALWAYS prioritize the safety of our staff, AmeriCorps Members and community. ART OF RECOVERY CLUBHOUSEQuilting Club Quilting Club is an opportunity for experienced and beginner quilters to come together and create their masterpieces together. If you know how to sew with a sewing machine and are interested in learning to quilt, you are more than welcome to join! This happens the last Saturday of each month, If you are interested you are more than welcome to check out our Eventbrite for more details and to sign up. What if I don't know how to sew? We encourage you to check out our Sewing Class that's on the first two Saturdays of the month. Sewing Class fills up fast, so we recommend you stay up to date with our Eventbrite posts

CIVIC ENGAGEMENTVet Fest 🇺🇸This October, Tuesday the 6th in Copperas Cove is a Vet Fest to celebrate the veterans within our community. There will be food, music, and vendors! Killeen Creators will be in attendance with our booth! We would love to see you there 🎉 If you are interested, here is their Facebook and website with additional details.
Mutual Aid: Neighbors Helping Neighbors Our Mutual Aid Program grew from what our AmeriCorps team was seeing every day in our gardens, clubhouse, and community outreach — neighbors struggling not only with food insecurity, but with basic essentials many people take for granted: hygiene products, pantry basics, clean socks and underwear, bottled water, over-the-counter wellness items, and simple necessities that help people maintain dignity during difficult times. Rather than waiting for solutions to arrive from somewhere else, our AmeriCorps members helped create a program rooted in a simple belief: communities are stronger when neighbors care for one another directly. Through our Share Shelves, Little Lending Libraries, and Thrifty Thursdays Mutual Aid Tent, community members are invited to both give and receive according to need and ability. In times of economic uncertainty, rising costs, social division, and political instability, mutual aid programs matter more than ever. They help communities build resilience, strengthen connection, and ensure that support can move quickly, locally, and humanely. Our model is simple: "Give all that you can. Take only what you need." Together, we are growing a culture of care, dignity, and shared responsibility — one neighbor at a time. 🌱❤
